1. "Soaring High on a Summer's Day, Elie" £3900 SOLD

For this painting I set myself the challenge of trying to include as much of Elie as I possibly could on one huge canvas. I not only wanted to capture as much of the sweeping bay as I could, I also wanted to paint all the summer activities that happen there such as :- building sand castles, playing cricket, dog walking, cycling, swimming, dolphins playing, sailing, canoeing, fishing, riding the banana boat and of course jumping off the pier. It took a lot of patience capturing every last detail but I was pleased with the final result. The happy scene is silently observed by the seagulls as they soar high in the blue summer sky.

This painting was inspired by the recent lockdown period. I spent this time at home in Edinburgh but I have family who live in Elie and they described the beach as more peaceful (apart from the birds who were actually more vocal) and somehow all of nature appeared more vibrant and clear. It was a quiet time of contemplation, a time we will always remember of hunkering down and cherishing our loved ones. For many of us it was a chance to take stock, appreciate the world around us and be extra grateful for those who care for us.

I came up with the idea for this painting during lockdown. It was a very sunny day and I had some friends round for a social distanced garden catch up. Aware that there was no shade in my garden, everyone brought a sun hat with them. It was such a cheerful display that I knew I wanted to incorporate into an East Neuk painting, so here it is. In this scene five Elie mothers or possibly Grandmothers share a bench on The Terrace whilst they watch their children taking sailing lessons in the sunny bay.

I love this view of Crail and I never tire of painting it. I don't know if there is a garden quite like this, with exactly this view but I like to think there is. How wonderful to be able to add to the beauty of this already amazing view by planting a colourful array of flowers. I am not much of a gardener but I imagine it is very rewarding and much like creating a painting. The "guests" mentioned in the title of the painting could refer to the couple doing all the hard work, or the butterflies fluttering by, or the sunflowers adding a stunning splash of yellow.

Elie is such a beautiful place no matter what time of year. With this series of three paintings above I wanted to show how Elie takes on a different character and feel at various times of the year. The Easter holidays are such a fun time when at last the weather is improving and the excitement of the summer is just around the corner. The Summer Holidays are peak season when Elie comes alive with colour and energy. The Christmas holidays have a calm, cosy feel all of their own. Wrapped up nice and warm, you can often enjoy the beach completely to yourself.

For some reason I am often drawn to paint places that sell ice cream. I think it is because they are usually such colourful, fun places which bring so much happiness to so many. Who doesn't love ice cream? In this scene there are people of all ages either queueing for, or enjoying a sweet treat. One of the students in his red gown is managing to eat a cone whilst carrying a heavy box and even the golfer on his way to the Old Course couldn't resist one. Unfortunately the dachshunds tied up in front of Janetta's are just out of reach of the ice cream that has fallen on the ground, however the fox terrier is more hopeful of a lick or two.

This family have managed to fit everyone and everything onto their bike and have set off from Elie to explore the other villages of the East Neuk. I would have loved to have had a fun mode of transport like this when my children were small ... although I'm not sure I could trust my dog to travel in the same trailer as the picnic!

I noticed this lovely view of Earlsferry stretching right out to the far away point at Chapel Green when I was out walking my dog one breezy morning. You can see Brodie and I on the far left of the beach. The sailing boats were not actually part of the scene that day, they came from another scene I sketched outside the Sailing Club at Lower Largo. I just felt that the Earlsferry scene needed a splash of colour and this 'rainbow race' fitted the bill perfectly.

You see so many window boxes dotted around the East Neuk and they are all jam-packed with beautiful flowers. I think it must be something to do with the sea air - which either makes the flowers grow better, or their colours look more vibrant. Either way they are a joy to paint. Waking up and remembering that you are on holiday in Elie is always such a wonderful feeling. Hopefully this painting captures that moment.
