Pier Walk with Hamish the St Andrews Cat
Since students make up almost half of the St Andrews population, I thought I would do a painting especially for them. The Pier Walk is a long standing student tradition which takes place after the Sunday service in St Salvator’s Chapel. Any student can take part. If you look closely you might recognise the back view of a rather famous ex-St Andrews couple who I decided to include. Apparently the reason for the custom has been lost in the mists of time but nonetheless the students create an awe-inspiring scene as their bright red gowns glide down the path past the Cathedral ruin and on to the pier. I really enjoyed painting the bright colours of the student’s gowns and clothes, echoing the colours of the buildings alongside the harbour. To emphasise these bright colours even further, I added the reflections of the buildings in the water. Hopefully this scene sums up the colourful, fun atmosphere of student life in St Andrews.
In the bottom right hand corner, Hamish McHamish, the now famous St Andrews cat is watching the procession go by. He is popular with locals and tourists, having over 5000 Facebook friends and a bronze statue in Church Square. He is apparently fond of students as he was recently rescued by some after being chased up a tree by two dogs. Luckily we have Brodie on a tight lead as we wander along the harbour to watch the parade.
