Lunch at the Grassmarket
At first glance you might be fooled into thinking that this scene is set in France or Italy. It is in fact set in The Grassmarket in Edinburgh’s Old Town. The day I happened to be out sketching and taking photographs for this painting was Edinburgh University’s Graduation day. On this day you see lots of be-gowned students wandering along with proud parents. In this painting I have included two of them sitting down to enjoy a celebratory alfresco lunch.
The Grassmarket is a lovely place to sit out on a sunny day. The row of trees separates you from the busy road and it seems quite tranquil. Many students get around on bicycles and you can see one of them parked here against a tree. I had seen this little pair of Scottie dogs with tartan collars elsewhere and had wanted to include them in a painting for some while. This seemed like the perfect location. They are eye-ing up the pigeons that peck fearlessly round them. The pigeons manage to keep just far enough out of the dogs’ way.
Both of these restaurants along with Mama Mia’s were favourite places to go when I was a student at Edinburgh College of Art. The college is just a stone’s throw away from here. We would often come here at night too, as there are some good pubs in amongst the restaurants. “Made in Italy” is one of the few places in Edinburgh you could get a really good hot chocolate late at night!
