Fish Suppers and Ice Creams, Anstruther
Recently I decided to do an up to date version of “The Queue for The Chippie, Anstruther” (which was one of my very early paintings) but this time I included the Ice Cream Parlour. Having two children has drawn my attention to the ice cream /sweetie shop side of things!
I focused on the people actually enjoying their treats this time. The couple on the far left were making the most amusing expressions as they tried to eat the freezing cold ice cream. The gentleman is making very sure that his cone is well away from the eager tongue of his hungry dog. I was inspired to include the couple on the far right after a lady told me the story of her first date with her husband. He had taken her to the Anstruther Chippie for a bite to eat and when they were sitting outside eating their fish suppers, one particularly persistent seagull kept trying to steal his chips. They both thought this was hilarious. It broke the ice and this funny experience sealed their relationship. If you look on the Anstruther Fish Bar website there is a warning not to feed the seagulls saying “What goes up must come down!”. The part of the painting requiring most patience was the area of curved cobble stones. By the time I had finished this I was more than ready for a fish supper and ice cream! I am delighted and honoured that this painting now hangs in Edinburgh’s St Columbus Hospice.
