A Night on the Town, George Street
George Street, which runs parallel to Princes Street, has become very busy over the last ten years. By day it is shopping heaven for smartly clad ladies and by night it is buzzing with pubs and restaurants. This is the first time I have painted the city at night so it was challenging to get the light sources and shadows looking right.
You might notice the girl outside Karen Millen showing off her zebra print purchase from earlier that day. She looks just as good wearing it as the mannequin in the shop window sporting the same one! Whenever I am out in Edinburgh in the evening there always seems to be someone eating a take away pizza. So, there he is sitting on the steps of Laura Ashley. Edinburgh is a Mecca for Stag and Hen parties so I have included one of each. The rather sedate Stag party queue for The Opal Lounge whilst the hen party are dressed for the occasion with balloons, headdresses and “L” plates.
I wanted to include a rickshaw as well as the more common mode of transport the black cab. The rickshaw driver was very kind and posed for me while I got all the information I needed to paint it. His carriage was empty however so I decided to fill it with a rather dapper looking kilted couple. I liked the contrasting effect that the lit windows in the flats gave to the painting. You can see one lady doing aerobics, someone reading on their window seat, a couple gazing romatically up at the stars and another woman peeking out of her curtains.
