A Try for Scotland, Murrayfield Stadium
My son is a big rugby fan so he was over the moon when I started painting this scene. I started out painting Scotland playing against South Africa as those were the two teams playing when I went along to Murrayfield to gather ideas for the painting. My son was adamant that the two teams should be Scotland verses England and that Scotland should be winning. I guess he has just had too many disappointments of that nature and wanted to redress the balance! I few minor changes were all that were needed to make his fantasy a reality. I just had to repaint the team’s strips and source a picture of the correct programme for the match. That is the beauty of painting….anything is possible!
I wanted to recreate the atmosphere at Murrayfield during such a big match with people cheering and waving. It was fun to paint all the Scottish flags especially the one on the child’s face. Knowing very little about the sport, the trickiest bit was positioning all the players correctly to represent a believable try. I was advised that I did an 'OK' job. When the spectators arrive and leave, the sea of people is quite incredible to watch. I can’t think of anywhere else you can see so many men in kilts. Quite a handsome sight as long as you ignore all the “See you Jimmy” hats!
