Tour Bus on The Mound
I had great fun painting this painting. I enjoyed all the various characters on the bus. I like the bald man reading his book, the woman fast asleep and the man at the front pointing in the opposite direction to the tour guide. I like the bright red colour of the bus and the fact it matches the tour guides jacket. The sister of this actual tour guide came into one of my exhibitions once. She bought a set of my tablemats with this painting on them and said she would have fun eating off her sister from now on!
This and other tour buses like it are a permanent feature in Edinburgh’s cityscape. They add a sometimes well-needed splash of colour especially on a dull, rainy day. Open topped buses like this one have often given me a giggle on a rainy day - the weather doesn’t seem to deter tourists from sitting upstairs, they continue to do so, with their umbrellas up for shelter!
I decided to echo the vibrant colours of the bus in the buildings in the background so I chose to paint the bus driving up The Mound. This way I could have the colourful row of houses known as Ramsey Garden in the distance.
