Tenement Life
This tenement block isn’t a true representation of any particular one in Edinburgh. I based it loosely on Viewforth, a street in Bruntsfield. It is done mostly from my experience of being a student in Edinburgh and having friends who lived in streets just like this. The fun of this kind of living arrangement is that reasonably well off city workers can be found living next door to some scruffy students. Sometimes one tenement block can represent all the different social groups living in Edinburgh.
I like the way that every window tells it’s own story. The viewer can decide what is happening in each flat that day. The man at number 28 relaxes in his well-kept garden, his Porsche parked safely in the Residents Only parking zone. The student two doors along looks up from his guitar playing to notice the traffic warden eyeing up his Volkswagen camper van parked on the double yellow lines.
Notice the two labrador neighbours having a “chat” on the top floor. Also, you might recognise the guitar-playing student. He is in my painting “Royal Mile Bus Stop” where he is out trying to boost his student allowance by busking.
