Dog Walking on Elie Beach
At one of my summer exhibitions in Elie someone said to me, “You know, Elie is lovely in the summer but I actually like it best in the winter.” This comment made me think, so I made a trip over to Elie on a January day to gather some painting ideas. This is what I found when I stepped onto the beach – dogs everywhere! I expected it to be deserted, but I guess people still have to walk their dogs in the winter. It seemed as if they had all chosen Elie beach to do it on that day! I wanted the painting to look as wintery as possible so I kept to a very limited palette of winter colours such as browns, greys, dull greens and blues.
I enjoyed painting all the different breeds of dogs – so many shapes and sizes. I was amused at the little French bulldog on the bottom right of the painting, running rings around his owner and getting him into a bit of a tangle! In hindsight I would have painted a tennis ball instead of a football in the foreground but at the time I didn’t own a dog. Now that I have one, I totally appreciate a dog’s obsession with tennis balls!
