Low Tide at The Ship Inn, Elie
This is another painting involving Elie’s Ship Inn. I was inspired to paint this painting after a friend told me the story of the time she came to Elie (on my strong recommendation). She and her sister sent their young sons off to play on the beach whilst they enjoyed a lovely time drinking and chatting in the beer garden. All was well. They could see the boys from where they were sitting. A few relaxing drinks later, they spotted their boys jumping up and down waving at them. Uh-oh, the tide had come all the way in around their sandcastle and they were stranded on top of it! Luckily a friendly, nearby dad had rolled up his trouser legs, waded in and resolved the situation. The boys were relieved…and the mums, even more so!
Apart from the odd unexpected surprise like that, I love the way that the water winds and trickles across the sand making beautiful patterns of swirling blue lines. In the same way, the smells from The Ship Inn’s barbeque were swirling and winding over to where I was standing sketching on the beach. Mmm…summer.
