Beach Cricket, Beer and Bunting
This scene sums up Elie at its best. The sun is shining, everyone is relaxed and The Ship Inn’s cricket team are entertaining us on the beach. I can’t remember who the opposing team were on this occasion. It could have been one of many clubs who come to compete against Elie such as Obolensky’s Heroes, E=MCC2 or my favourite, The Fat Beardies! There is a whole summer full of Sunday cricket matches played on the beach in front of the beer garden and thankfully the sun manages to make an appearance for most of them. We were cheering for my brother in law who plays for The Ship’s team. He is the cricketer in the red cap. In the summer there is always pretty bunting stretching from one lamp post to the next down by the harbour. It gives such a lovely feeling of celebrating happy times that I thought I’d include it in this painting.
Whilst I am painting a scene with lots of people in it, I like to imagine the conversations or even the thoughts that each character is having. The two gentlemen in hats in the foreground are discussing their past cricket victories, when they were in their prime. Behind them, there are two young ladies checking out the suitability of the young, handsome cricketers. Over to the left, it looks like Brodie is in for a treat….unless the girl’s brother can attract their dad’s attention to tell him what his naughty sister is up to!
