Summer Morning, Elie Golf Course
When out walking with Brodie one autumn afternoon near Grange Hill in Earlsferry, I happened to look over my shoulder and saw this amazing view. It included the Lady’s Tower, the Granary, the harbour, the lighthouse and the steeple of Elie and Earlsferry Townhall. I knew straight away that it would make a great composition. I loved the way the scene was made up of horizontal stripes – the two fairways at the bottom followed by the strip of buildings then a strip of water, another of land then another of sea before the final strip of sky at the top. I couldn’t wait to start painting all of the interesting roof shapes, especially the little shadows cast by the various chimney pots.
There was one problem – it was a cold November day and the golf course was deserted. I wanted the painting to look summery, fun and alive so I created some imaginary golfers! A ladies’ four-ball playing down the seventeenth and a men’s four-ball playing up the fourth. The golfers added the splash of colour I needed and “Summer Morning, Elie Golf Course” was complete. The observant amongst you might notice that there are two things about the painting that belie the fact that it is a summer morning. The boats have been taken out of the water for winter and the shadows cast are afternoon shadows. Thank goodness for artist’s licence!
