This painting is looking at another part of the fisherman’s journey, the beginning. I watched and sketched as this boat called “Launch Out” prepared for the off. I was fascinated by what each fisherman was doing, what they were wearing and what their living accommodation looked like. Often I am painting fishing boats as attractive splashes of colour in a harbour scene but this time I was drawn to examine what the structure of the boats looked like, the bolts, chains and rusty metal work.
As I was painting it I relished all the circular shapes such as the tyres, the buoys, the port holes and the bolts. They seemed to contrast perfectly against all the square shapes of the windows, brickwork and tiles in the background. There was not a single soul on the harbour’s edge to wave them off, only the seagulls gathered round watching with curiosity.
